Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Ethics

Search Engine is one of the primary ways an internet user can come across a website. Hence the website with good search engine listings may find an increased traffic. However, the websites of some companies appear poorly on the search engine listings since they haven’t really bothered about knowing how a search engine works. Hence preparing a website through search engine optimization apart from submitting it to a search engine will definitely boost the sites traffic.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the quality of traffic to a website from search engines by improving the content quality and having relevant keywords which will rank the site higher in the search engine result list. In simple words, it is the process of choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a site and ensuring that the site places well when those keyword phrases are part of the web search.

Professional SEO’s are hired by small industries in order to make their website visible and also for advertising their company without investing in hoardings and banners. In an aggressive bid to win over your rival company, companies may use various tricks like clogging with irrelevant keywords to get more traffic rather than improving the content and making the site user friendly. This eventually brings down the reputation of the company and the site can also be banned from the search engine.

Thus the need for SEO ethics arises. Some of the basic ethics which can be listed are as follows:
The SEO should never cause harm to the client by causing a ban on the site in search engines by continued use of a technology or procedure which is not accepted.
The SEO should never violate the rules and regulations published by the search engines. If any rule is not clear, they must seek clarification before using potentially harmful technology.
The SEO should never offend a consumer with irrelevant keywords which will direct the consumer to an irrelevant page with respect to the search
The SEO should never violate laws regarding copyright, trademark, service marks or laws related to spamming as listed in the country and international law.
The SEO should never represent others work as their own instead they should author original works. Even borrowing part of others work should be avoided.
The SEO should protect the confidentiality and anonymity of their clients with regards to privileged information. They should not try to market themselves in client sites or even publish their logos without prior approval from their client.
The SEO practitioner should work to the best of his ability to retain or improve the rankings of their client site by constantly upgrading and improving content with respect to the consumer.

These are, as mentioned above, some of the basic ethics. There are no ground rules as to what is and what is not right. However using unethical ways to increase site traffic is definitely bad ethics. Playing by the rule book and being sincere to the client and delivering what he expects and the consumer needs will definitely establish the ranking and well as the credibility of the site.
